Spikedrivers are one of the most original,
innovative and exciting bands to have played at Marigolds. Back again after
their previous fantastic gigs the Spikedrivers are
three superb musicians who demonstrate the mastery of their instruments and the
pure pleasure they get from performing. Their performance is guaranteed to be
sparkling, full of life and good humour, combined with highly impressive
musicianship and a wide range of material, which juxtaposed traditional songs
with their own writing.
Taking inspiration from their American roots
and the country’s rich musical heritage, the Spikedrivers’
songwriting, vocal harmonies and unique instrumentation will create an atmosphere that will take you
on a journey, from southern jukejoints and lazy front
porches to the huge open spaces of dust bowls and railroad tracks disappearing
into the distance. Don’t miss an excellent night's entertainment by a really
good tight trio displaying a wealth of variety and interest.

The band’s music, categorized as retro hard-bop in the classic Blue Note
mold often uses material from the pens of the two leaders.
’Collins plays bright, crackling trumpet and Allen's tenor is declamatory
in the grand manner, but there's a restlessness about this band's music that
defies expectations. Instead of grooving comfortably along, Enzo
Zirilli drums chatter away busily and Ross Stanley on
organ produces sudden changes of register and great washes of harmonic colour.’
